VICTIMS OF CRIME

Kozarov Lawyers is a firm based in the heart of Melbourne's CBD, Geelong and Ballarat. 

Victims of Crime Assistance is funded by the Victorian Government to assist victim's recovery from a physical and/or psychological injury as a result of a violent crime, therefore you are NOT required to pay for our assistance in your application.

Examples of claims made by Applicants to the Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal include however are not limited to:

  • Assault;

  • Experienced Family Violence;

  • Robbery;

  • Armed Robbery;

  • Stalking;

  • Dangerous or culpable driving; 

  • Conduct endangering life; and

  • Sexual assault.

Claims can also be made by persons who has witnessed a crime or a family member of a person who was injured or killed.

​

The types of assistance available ranges from expenses for counselling, medical, safety-related, and funeral expenses. Loss of earnings and other reasonable expenses may also be available. 

​

The Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal has jurisdiction to award as a lump sum payment for physical and/or psychological injury sustained from the crime between $100.00 - $10,000.00.  The Tribunal may also award up to $60,000.00 for other expenses such as medical treatments, CCTV system or alarm systems and up to $20,000.00 for lost income as a result of your injuries.

Funeral, counselling, medical and distress expenses can also be awarded if a loved one has died as a result of a violent crime that amount can be awarded is up to $100,000.00 

 

Time Limits

You must make a Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal application within two years of the crime (or within two years of death if the victim of crime dies). Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal may allow an extension of time however you should seek legal advice before making an application out of time.
